Dogs Drool, Horses Sweat, Men Perspire and Women Glow

At least that is what I was taught as a good Southern girl. Women don’t sweat or perspire, they GLOW! Well, I’ve been glowing a LOT lately as the rainy season continues in Uganda. It is only in the 60’s and 70’s F, but the humidity is amazing. I can almost feel the fat in my body melting away, and can see the fluid in my body dripping from my face onto the table, my blouse or anything close to me. My hair gets so wet you would think I had just washed it. Instead, of becoming fluffy and light, it is stuck together with salt. It frequently curls into tiny ringlets.

I had been told that there was a shopping mall just up a rather steep hill from where I’m staying. The informant didn’t say it was also a couple miles around the top of the hill on the left. So, in the misty rain, we decided to walk to the mall. It was very nearly five miles altogether. By the time we arrived, I was VERY thirsty and my face was the same purple as my shirt.

We found a restaurant where we ordered bacon and mushroom cheese burgers and fries! We were desperate for some Western style food. We enjoyed a passion fruit and pineapple fruit juice while we waited for the burgers to arrive. They looked delicious, but unfortunately, the meat was only partly cooked, so we sent it back to the kitchen and proceeded to dig into the fries and the rest of the bacon and mushrooms. We had finished those off by the time the burgers arrived again, so we left them to be given away.

We did some shopping and I made two trips to the ATM trying to get my head around the fact that 36000 Uganda Shillings is equal to USD $10. We bought a few things in the supermarket, including some cherry jam as a substitute for cranberry sauce for our Thanksgiving dinner on Tuesday evening. I also got some yogurt for the week.

We then began looking in some shops for Christmas presents, and I found a couple. We decided we did NOT want to walk back, even if it was downhill most of the way. So, we asked one of the security guards to get us a taxi. We probably overpaid, but it was worth it to sit down.

As we were getting back to our rooms at the Conference Centre, I realized I had left my jam and yogurt in the last shop we were in! Oh dear! Now what should I do? I needed a rest, so went back to my room for a drink of water and a rest. I was trying to contact someone with a car so I could go back to collect my parcel when to my surprise, the taxi driver showed up with my parcel. He had returned to the shopping mall and been told by the lady in the shop that I had left my parcel. He kindly brought it to me. That shop will have my business and as much more as I can encourage! I was SOOOOO grateful.

I’m now looking forward to taking a hot shower, once they turn the hot water on for the evening.
